What is the morning-after pill?

If you have had unsafe sex and you really don’t want to get pregnant, you can opt for a morning-after pill. This is a pill with a high dose of hormones that usually keeps you from getting pregnant. Note that after taking a morning-after pill, you do get your period. If your period fails, take a pregnancy test. This is because the reliability of a morning-after pill is less than that of the morning-after IUD, so you could still become pregnant after taking it.

  • You buy the morning-after pill at the drugstore or pharmacy.
  • It is important to take this pill as soon as possible after sex, preferably within 12 hours, because the sooner you take it after sex, the less chance of pregnancy.
  • The morning-after pill can have unpleasant side effects, nor is it a substitute for regular birth control.
  • It also does not protect you from an STD (sexually transmitted disease).
